First: the car ferry does not go to Hvar Town. It lands in Stari Grad, on the opposite side of the island, about 20 km and a bus or taxi ride from the nightlife, the Riva and most of the hotels. Second: catamarans to Hvar Town genuinely sell out in July and August — sometimes days in advance. Third: the last scheduled boat leaves early by holiday standards. Miss the evening catamaran and your options are the 20:30 car ferry to the wrong port, waiting for the 01:30 night ferry (also the wrong port), or a private boat. If you’re weighing up Hvar Town against Stari Grad as a base in the first place, we’ve written a full comparison in Stari Grad or Hvar Town.

Split to Hvar catamaran: operators, 2026 timetable and prices

The catamaran is what most visitors mean when they say “Split to Hvar ferry”. Jadrolinija fast boats often load at Gat sv. Nikole, Krilo at Gat sv. Petra or Obala Lazareta, and it genuinely varies by day. Your ticket shows a boat name, not a berth. Arrive 30–40 minutes early, find the departure board, then look for the boat’s name on the stern. Every July I watch someone sprint the length of the harbour at 07:58 because they queued at the wrong pier.

Split to Hvar ferry times: first boat, last boat, and how often

The questions I get asked most on the dock, answered straight.

What time is the first ferry from Split to Hvar? In peak summer, the first fast boat to Hvar Town leaves at 07:30 (Jadrolinija line 659), with Krilo close behind at 08:00. If you count Stari Grad, the car ferry’s 05:00 departure is the true first boat of the day — and there’s the 01:30 night ferry before that. Outside high season the first catamaran can be as late as 14:00, so never assume a morning boat exists in winter.

What time is the last ferry from Split to Hvar? In July and August, the last catamaran to Hvar Town is TP Line’s 19:15. After that, your scheduled options are the 20:30 car ferry to Stari Grad, the 01:30 night ferry (mid-June to late August only), or a private boat. This is the single most important timetable fact on this route: if your flight lands in Split after about 17:30, you are unlikely to make the last catamaran once you’ve collected bags and crossed town to the port. That scenario — late arrival, no boats left — is exactly what our Split Airport to Hvar water taxi exists for, and we’ve written up the timings in detail in Split Airport to Hvar in 2026.

How often do boats run? Roughly 19–20 catamarans daily to Hvar Town in July–August, plus 7–8 car ferries to Stari Grad. In winter that collapses to 2–3 catamarans and 3 car ferries a day.

How long does it take? 50 minutes on the quickest Krilo boats, 55–65 minutes on most others, up to 1 h 25 on services that call at Milna or Bol first. The car ferry takes about two hours to Stari Grad.

Do I need to book? In July and August, yes — genuinely. Popular departures (the 08:00–10:00 morning boats and the 17:00–19:15 evening boats above all) sell out days ahead. Book online as soon as your dates are fixed; a week in advance is a sensible minimum in peak season. In May, June and September you can usually book a day or two ahead; in winter you can walk up.

Car ferry Split to Hvar: Jadrolinija line 635 to Stari Grad

The workhorse of the route. Line 635 is a proper roll-on roll-off ship — vehicles below, big lounges and open decks above — and it’s the only way to get a car, camper or motorhome onto Hvar from Split. It’s also the cheapest crossing for foot passengers and the boat most likely to sail when the wind gets up.

2026 timetable pattern

In peak summer, departures from Split run roughly: 01:30, 05:00, 08:30, 11:00, 14:30, 17:00 and 20:30 — up to 8 sailings on the busiest days, dropping to around 7 in the shoulder season and 5 in winter. The crossing takes about 1 h 50 min to 2 hours. Exact times shift between seasons, so confirm your date on jadrolinija.hr before you travel.

El 01:30 night ferry deserves its own mention. It runs only in the core of summer — roughly 20 June to 24 August — and it’s a lifeline for late flight arrivals, landing in Stari Grad around 03:20. But be honest with yourself about what awaits: a quiet quay two kilometres from Stari Grad’s old town and 20 km from Hvar Town, with no bus meeting the boat at that hour. It only works if you’ve pre-arranged a taxi or your host is collecting you. We’ve compared the night ferry against a direct boat transfer in late-night and rough-sea Hvar transfers.

2026 prices (line 635)

Ticket

High season (29 May – 27 Sep 2026)

Off season

Adultos

€8.40

€5.90

Standard car (up to 5 m / 2 m high)

€47.60

€35.60

Children, motorbikes, campers and oversized vehicles have their own tariff lines — check the current Jadrolinija price list. A car plus driver therefore costs €56 one way in summer. Jadrolinija now sells vehicle tickets online with a reserved place on a specific departure, which has tamed the worst of the old first-come-first-served chaos — but with a car in July or August I’d still be in the lane 60–90 minutes before departure, because boarding is slow and the port area is congested.

Arriving in Stari Grad: getting to Hvar Town

The ferry pier sits at the end of Stari Grad’s long bay, a couple of kilometres from the old town itself. A Čazmatrans bus meets most (not all) daytime ferry arrivals for the roughly 20-minute run over the hill to Hvar Town — cash to the driver, no advance booking, only a handful of services a day, so check the current schedule. Taxis line up on the pier for every arrival; expect around €30–45 to Hvar Town. If you’re arriving on the 01:30 night ferry or the 20:30 evening boat, arrange transport before you sail.

Skipper’s tip #2: Think hard before bringing a car to Hvar at all. Hvar Town’s centre is pedestrianised, parking is scarce and expensive in August, and the island’s best beaches are reached by boat anyway. Most of my passengers who brought a car used it twice. If your base is Hvar Town, come as a foot passenger and rent a scooter or a small boat locally for the one or two days you want wheels — and see where to stay on Hvar in 2026 before you commit to a side of the island.

Hvar to Split ferry: the return leg

The return direction has its own rhythm and its own traps, so it deserves more than “the same in reverse”.

From Ciudad de Hvar, catamarans back to Split run throughout the day in summer — the earliest departures leave around 06:25–07:00 and the last around 20:30 in the peak weeks, with the same three operators and the same €10–30 fares. The morning boats between about 06:25 and 08:00 are the commuter and connection boats — busy with people catching flights from Split — and the late-afternoon boats fill with day-trippers heading back. Exact times mirror the outbound schedule’s seasonal shifts, so check the current timetable for your date rather than trusting a screenshot from last year.

From Stari Grad, the car ferry returns to Split roughly two hours after each outbound arrival, giving 5–8 sailings a day depending on season; check jadrolinija.hr for your specific date.

Three return-leg warnings from experience:

Book the return before you book the outbound. Counter-intuitive, but in July and August the evening Hvar→Split sailings sell out fastest of anything on the route. Everyone wants to leave at 17:00–19:00; almost nobody wants the 06:25.

Flight-day maths: if you’re flying out of Split, take a boat that lands at least 3.5–4 hours before departure. Catamarans do get delayed, and in strong wind they get cancelled — and then you’re negotiating for the car ferry with two hundred other people. For a same-morning flight, an early catamaran or a private water taxi timed to your flight are the only options I’d stake a ticket on.

Ticket offices in Hvar Town sit along the Riva near the catamaran berth, but in peak season don’t rely on buying same-day at the window — the boats are frequently already full. Buy online the moment your plans firm up.

If you’re returning after dinner — and half of Hvar’s charm happens after dinner — remember the scheduled service simply ends around 20:30. After that, the only boat leaving Hvar Town with your name on it is one you’ve chartered. We run the Hvar→Split leg at any hour, including 02:00 post-club runs and 04:30 pre-flight runs; pricing is per boat, not per person, as laid out in our water taxi Split price guide for 2026.

Water taxi Split to Hvar: the private alternative

Searches for “water taxi Split to Hvar” have quadrupled in the last couple of years, and having spent my working life on this stretch of water, I understand why: the scheduled boats are good, but they run on their timetable, not yours.

Here’s how a private transfer actually works. A speedboat or cabin launch picks you up at the Split waterfront (or Resnik near the airport, or your hotel’s jetty), and takes you directly to Hvar Town’s Riva — or to Stari Grad, Jelsa, Milna on the Pakleni islands, or the beach below your villa. The crossing takes about 55 minutes. Boats run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including closed-cabin boats for wind, rain and winter. The price is €370–900 per boat, not per person — the low end for a compact speedboat outside peak weeks, the high end for the largest closed-cabin boat in August — and it includes skipper, fuel and port fees.

Honesty time, because this site sells water taxis and you should trust what it tells you: the catamaran is the better choice more often than not. Two people travelling light on a calm July morning, flexible on time? Take the €25 catamaran and spend the difference on dinner at a konoba. The water taxi earns its price in specific, predictable situations:

Late arrivals. Flight lands 18:45, last catamaran 19:15 across town — you won’t make it. A private boat waits for you.

Groups of 4–12. At six people, €550 per boat is under €95 a head, door to door, versus €25–30 each plus taxis at both ends — the gap narrows to very little for a vastly better journey.

Sold-out days. When every August catamaran shows red, the sea is still open.

Odd hours and tight connections. The 05:30 run to make an 09:00 flight, the 01:00 run after a wedding.

Awkward luggage, pets, prams, mobility issues. No 20 kg debates, no carrying bags down a crowded gangway; the dog rides in the cabin.

Anywhere-but-the-port drop-offs. Villa on the Pakleni side, hotel in Milna bay — scheduled boats only know two piers on the whole island.

Full boat options, exact 2026 pricing and instant booking are on our Split to Hvar water taxi page, or simply message us with your date and group size and we’ll tell you honestly whether you even need us.

Split to Hvar day trip: a realistic 2026 plan

Yes, Hvar works as a day trip from Split — with about eight to ten hours on the island if you plan it properly. Here’s the plan I give friends.

07:30 or 08:00 — catamaran from Split (book both legs in advance; see the sellout warnings above). Coffee on board, arrive Hvar Town 08:35–09:00 before the day-trip crowds.

Morning — climb to the Španjola fortress while it’s cool (30–40 minutes up, sensational view of the Pakleni islands), then wander the old town, the Cathedral square and the Benedictine convent.

Midday — taxi boat from the harbour to the Pakleni islands (Palmižana or Mlini) for a swim and lunch, or stay in town and swim at Pokonji Dol.

Late afternoon — back on the Riva for ice cream and people-watching; aperitivo as the megayachts jostle for berths.

18:00–19:00 — catamaran back to Split, landing by 20:00 for dinner. Don’t book the very last boat as your only plan; if it’s full or cancelled, your day trip becomes an unplanned overnight.

Avoid building a day trip around the car ferry: two hours each way plus the Stari Grad–Hvar Town transfer eats three hours of island time per direction. And if a fixed schedule doesn’t suit — you want a swim stop at a Brač beach on the way, or a 21:00 return after dinner — a chartered boat turns the same day trip into a private itinerary; that’s the same €370–900 per-boat pricing, split among the group, both ways negotiable when you ask us for a quote.

Luggage, pets, bikes and cars: what each boat allows

Luggage

Catamarans nominally allow around 20 kg plus hand luggage per person, stowed in racks near the door. Krilo is famously relaxed about it in practice, but in August, when 300 people board with 300 suitcases, space genuinely runs out. The car ferry has no meaningful limit — walk on with whatever you can carry. A private boat takes what fits, which on our larger cabin boats means a family’s worth of cases, a pram and dive gear without discussion.

Pets

On Jadrolinija’s big ferries, larger dogs travel free but stay on the open deck. On catamarans the rules are tighter: Jadrolinija requires designated carriers on deck with a fee and mandatory reservation; Krilo requires dogs to be muzzled and leashed (guide dogs excepted). Small pets in carriers are generally straightforward everywhere. On a water taxi, the dog sits with you in the cabin — no muzzle debates at the gangway.

Bicycles

The car ferry to Stari Grad is the reliable option — bikes roll on for a small fee. Jadrolinija does not carry bicycles on most of its catamarans. Krilo carries a limited number of bikes on certain lines, pre-booked online, typically charged at the passenger fare. If your bike is non-negotiable, plan around line 635.

Cars, campers and scooters

Line 635 to Stari Grad only. No catamaran or water taxi carries vehicles. In August, reserve the vehicle space online as early as possible and arrive at the lanes 60–90 minutes ahead.

Bad weather: what actually happens when the wind picks up

Two winds run this channel. The bura screams down off the mainland mountains from the north-east — cold, dry, violent, short-lived — and chops the sea into sharp, close-set waves. The jugo blows warm from the south-east for days at a time, building long, deep swell and bringing rain. Each cancels boats in its own way, and there’s a clear ladder of resilience:

First to stop: small boats and catamarans. Fast passenger catamarans are the most weather-sensitive scheduled service. In a serious blow, expect delays or outright cancellations, announced via the operators’ passenger notices — check the news section on jadrolinija.hr on any windy morning.

Last to stop: the car ferry. Line 635 is a big, heavy ship on a partly sheltered routing, and it frequently sails when every catamaran is tied up. When the catamaran board is full of red, the move is: get to the ferry terminal early and take the 635 to Stari Grad, then a taxi over the hill.

The professional middle ground: our closed-cabin boats operate in a wider weather window than open speedboats, and because we’re not tied to a timetable we can shift your departure a few hours to slide between fronts — often the difference between travelling today and not. When it’s genuinely dangerous, we say no; that’s the job. The full decision tree is in our guide to Hvar transfers in rough seas and late at night.

Skipper’s tip #3: Prone to seasickness? The jugo is your enemy, not the bura — long rolling swell is what turns stomachs. On a jugo day, sit low and central on the catamaran, watch the horizon, and skip the coffee. Better yet, travel in the early morning: the channel is almost always at its calmest before 10:00 in summer, before the afternoon maestral fills in. It’s also why I schedule my own crossings before breakfast.

Split to Hvar month by month, 2026

January–March: Skeleton service — around 3 car ferries and 2–3 catamarans daily, afternoon-weighted. Off-season prices (€5.90 adult on the ferry). Bura cancellations most likely now; the car ferry is your reliable friend.

April: Frequency creeps up; the island wakes around Easter. Still no need to pre-book more than a day or two out.

May: Jadrolinija’s direct 641 catamaran starts 1 May; TP Line’s coastal service starts 8 May; high-season ferry pricing begins 29 May. Lovely month to travel — boats are plentiful, crowds aren’t.

June: Near-full summer timetable. The 01:30 night ferry starts around 20 June. Weekend sailings begin selling out.

July–August: Peak everything: ~19–20 catamarans and 7–8 ferries daily, first boat 07:30, last 19:15. Book a week or more ahead for the boats you actually want, especially evening returns from Hvar. Night ferry runs until about 24 August. Calmest seas of the year, but the afternoon maestral can make open-boat crossings splashy.

September: My favourite month on the water — full timetable until late September, warm sea, thinning crowds. High-season prices end 27 September.

October: Rapid wind-down: line 641 runs to 11 October, TP Line’s coastal catamaran to 18 October. After mid-month you’re back to the winter pattern, and the first serious jugo storms arrive.

November–December: Winter skeleton again. Hvar is quiet, green and genuinely lovely — but plan around 2–3 catamarans a day and watch the forecast. This is the season our closed-cabin boats earn their keep for islanders and off-season travellers alike.

Split to Hvar ferry: frequently asked questions

How long is the ferry from Split to Hvar?

Catamarans to Hvar Town take 50 minutes to 1 h 25 min depending on the operator and stops; most direct sailings are 50–65 minutes.
