It is a flooded sea cave in Balun cove, on the east side of Biševo. Biševo is a very small island with only a few permanent residents. It lies 4.5 nautical miles from Komiža (a fishing town on Vis island) and about 30 nautical miles from Split. The cave chamber is about 24 metres long, with water 10–12 metres deep and a ceiling up to 15 metres high.

The magic is pure physics. Below the waterline there’s a natural opening in the rock. Between late morning and early afternoon, sunlight dives through that submerged gap, reflects off the white seabed, and lights the whole chamber from below. The water turns a luminous, backlit turquoise-blue, and anything beneath the surface — fish, oars, the hull of the boat — glows silver.

Local fishermen always knew about the cave. The wider world learned about it in 1884. That year, the Austrian painter Eugen von Ransonnet-Villez visited and wrote about it in a Vienna newspaper. He said it was more beautiful than the famous Blue Grotto of Capri. Ransonnet asked for easier access. A small entrance, about 1.5 metres high and 2.5 metres wide, was cut into the rock so rowing boats could get in. That man-made door is still the only way in. Its size decides how a visit works today. It limits which boats fit, how many people can enter each hour, and why a small swell from the south closes the cave.

The cave is a protected natural monument. Entry needs a ticket, and a licensed boat takes you inside. Swimming inside has been banned since 2019.

How does it compare to Capri’s Blue Grotto? I have seen both caves. Capri’s is more of a show, with singing boatmen, bigger crowds and higher prices. On a clear summer day, the blue at Biševo is just as strong, and the setting is wilder. If Capri’s grotto is an opera, Biševo’s is a very good secret told quietly.

Comment se déroule réellement la visite de la grotte bleue ?

This is the part most brochures skip. Turn the flash off and lower the exposure a little. Film a short video too. Keep bags small; you board from a moving jetty. Limited mobility? Tell your operator in advance — the step into the small boat is the only awkward moment of the day. And seasickness planning matters more for the crossing from Split than for the cave: take the tablet before departure, not at Biševo.

Is five minutes of blue worth the journey? On its own, honestly, no — and I say that as someone who sells this trip. Leave earlier to avoid the cave queue. Stay longer at Budikovac (a small island with a sandy beach) if you have young children. Choose a quiet local restaurant instead of Hvar Town. Our boats go from Split to Biševo in about 1 hour 20 minutes. That is 30–40 minutes faster than the average group boat. You spend the saved time swimming. When people search “blue cave Dubrovnik”, they usually mean the Biševo cave they saw on Instagram — but Biševo is à plus de 200 km de côtes de DubrovnikAucune excursion d'une journée ne les relie. It sits under the island’s southern cliffs, its entrance is too small for any boat, and there is no ticket office: your tour boat anchors outside and you nager dans wearing a mask and life vest, guided through a short passage into a chamber where sunlight turns the water a deep sapphire. It’s smaller and less famous — but you’re floating dans the glow rather than looking at it from a bench, and for many guests that beats the Biševo experience outright.

Standard Dubrovnik tours are half-day small-group speedboat trips (3.5–4.5 hours, €60–90 per person) combining the blue cave, the three “green caves” on Koločep’s coast, snorkelling stops and usually a swim at sandy Šunj beach on Lopud; gear and drinks typically included, no separate cave fee. The same midday-light rule applies, so take a departure that puts you at the cave late morning. Prefer muscle power? Guided excursions en kayak de mer paddle the Koločep cliffs and caves for around €80 for a full day.

Two things to know before you book. You enter this cave by swimming, so it suits confident swimmers. Vests and guides help nervous swimmers. But if you dislike putting your face in open water, you may not enjoy it. It has the same weakness as Biševo. A swell from the south makes the entrance unsafe, and tours change their route. But a half-day Dubrovnik tour is much easier to rebook than a full-day Split trip of 100 nautical miles.

Biševo Blue Cave vs Dubrovnik (Koločep) Blue Cave

Biševo Blue Cave

Koločep Blue Cave (Dubrovnik)

Emplacement

Biševo island, off Vis, Central Dalmatia

Koločep island, Elaphiti, 10 km from Dubrovnik

Villes les plus proches

Split (~30 NM), Hvar (~1 h), Komiža (15–20 min)

Dubrovnik (20–30 min by speedboat)

Comment vous entrez

Petit bateau officiel ; baignade interdite

Vous nagez jusqu'à l'eau ; aucun bateau ne convient.

Tarif d'entrée 2026

€24 high / €18 shoulder, cash

None — included in tour

Temps à l'intérieur

5–10 minutes, boat circuit

Typically 10–20 min, as your group lingers

Échelle et renommée

Chambre plus grande, mondialement connue, lueur la plus intense

Plus petit, plus intime, beaucoup moins fréquenté

Durée et prix du circuit

Full day from Split (€80–120 + fees) or short hop from Vis

Half day, €60–90 all-in

Lequel choisir ? Go to the blue cave nearest your base.
