Do you want to go from Split to Stari Grad with a car? Then you need the Jadrolinija car ferry (line 635). Split is the big port city on the mainland. Stari Grad is a small old harbour town on the north coast of Hvar island. The ferry takes about 1h50–2h. In high season, one adult plus a standard car pays about €56 one way (€41.50 in low season). No car? The fast catamaran to Hvar Town is quicker. A private boat can take you to the Stari Grad waterfront in under one hour. Remember: Stari Grad and Hvar Town are two different towns, about 20 km apart.

“Hvar” is the name of the island and also of its best-known town. The car ferry from Split does not go to Hvar Town. It goes to Stari Grad, a separate harbour about 20 km from Hvar Town. Are you bringing a car, a bike or a camper? Then Stari Grad is your port. Are you on foot and staying near Hvar Town? Then you usually want the catamaran. So the real question is simple: do you need a car on the island?
Line 635 is the only public boat from Split that carries cars to Hvar. There is one other car ferry, from Drvenik to Sućuraj. Drvenik is a small port on the mainland, about 1.5 hours south of Split by car. Sućuraj is a village on the far east end of Hvar, a long drive from the main towns. The official crossing time on line 635 is 110 minutes. Plan for 1h50–2h, and a bit more when the sea is rough.
The ferry runs every day, all year. In peak summer (about 19 June–23 August 2026) there are about seven sailings each way. In the weeks before and after, there are six. In winter there are five. The first boat leaves early, around 05:00–05:30. In peak season the last boat leaves in the late evening.
Prices change with the season. In the 2026 high season (29 May–27 September), an adult ticket is €8.40. A standard car (up to 5.0 m long and 2.0 m high) is €47.60. That is about €56 one way. In low season (1 Jan–28 May and 28 Sep–31 Dec), you pay €5.90 plus €35.60, about €41.50 in total.
Many people miss this: your ticket for a sailing is also the place for your car on that boat. In July and August, popular sailings sell out days before. Book with Jadrolinija early. With a car, come to the port 45–60 minutes before departure.
Tipp des Skippers: is your sailing sold out? Try the Drvenik–Sućuraj ferry. It is shorter and not as busy. But it arrives on the far east end of Hvar, so you then drive 60–75 minutes across the island. It saves your trip, but you arrive later.
Is a private transfer worth it? A simple cost check
Here we compare the worst normal case of the “cheap” public route with our boat at its best: a full boat of 14 people sharing one boat, from Split Airport to Stari Grad.
| Öffentliche Route (schlimmster Fall) | Dalmatien-Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Flughafen → Fährhafen Split | 4 taxis × ~€55 = ~€220 (more at night) | Included — we pick you up |
| Boot | Car ferry €8 per person × 14 = €112 (peak season) | Ein privates Boot ≈ 425 € (ganzes Boot) |
| Hafen → Ihre Unterkunft | Another taxi, plus your luggage | Haus-zu-Haus-Service |
| Warten | 45–90 minutes early, fixed timetable, often in the hot sun | None — we leave when you land |
| Geld | ~332 € (≈ 24 € pro Person) | ~425 € (≈ 30 € pro Person) |
| Zeit | 3–5 hours — a 2-hour car ferry, then a taxi at the other end | About 1 hour, direct |
A full boat costs a little more per person. But you arrive hours earlier, in private, from door to door. It is also the only way to cross late at night or very early in the morning.
Was Sie sonst noch mit Dalmatia Express erhalten
- Private — only your group. No strangers and no full ferry deck.
- We meet you at the airport gate. Our driver carries your luggage and walks you to the boat. The crew helps you off at the other end — from door to door.
- Closed cabin with radar and a licensed crew. It is safe in rough sea, and we sail when the catamarans are cancelled.
- Open 24/7. Book by phone, SMS or WhatsApp — even during your flight — and we wait for you when you land.
- A beautiful trip. You see open sea, islands and small quiet bays, not a busy car deck.
- Local help on board. The crew tells you about the best beaches, konobas (small family restaurants) and places to see.
- Lower prices on our tours. Transfer guests pay less for our Blue Cave and island trips.
- Trusted by well-known clients, like Mate Rimac and a James Bond film crew.
Many people do not know this: in peak season, the last car ferry to Stari Grad leaves in the evening. If your flight is late or delayed, there is no public boat until the morning. Then you pay for a hotel night in Split (€100–180) and new tickets, or you wait for hours at the port. Our closed-cabin boats run 24/7. They still sail in a bura (a strong, cold north-east wind) when the catamarans are cancelled.
Tipp des Skippers: are you 4 or more people with luggage, or does your flight land after about 19:00? Then the private boat is often the better deal. Add up taxis, tickets and maybe a hotel night, and the boat usually wins — and it is always on time.

Der Vergleich: Autofähre, Katamaran, Bus oder privates Boot
| Option | Ankunft in | Reisezeit | Preis 2026 (einfache Fahrt) | Benötigt man ein Auto? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autofähre (Jadrolinija 635) | Stari Grad | ca. 1 Stunde 50–2 Stunden | Ca. 56 € Erwachsener + Auto (Hauptsaison), ca. 41,50 € Nebensaison | Ja |
| Passagierkatamaran (Jadrolinija 641 / Krilo) | Stadt Hvar | 50–60 Minuten | ca. 10–30 € pro Person | NEIN |
| Privatboot (Dalmatien-Express) | Stari Grad, Hvar Town or any dock you choose — door to door. Pickup at Split Airport is possible. | About 55 minutes. Leaves when you want, 24/7 | €370–900 per boat (whole boat, not per person) — a fair price for groups of 4–10 | No car — but lots of space for luggage and sports gear. Sails when catamarans are cancelled |
| Car ferry, then a bus or taxi to Hvar Town | Stadt Hvar (über Stari Grad) | Gesamtdauer ca. 2 Stunden 10–2 Stunden 35 Minuten | Ferry ticket + €2–5 (bus) or about €30–45 (taxi) | Only if you drive your car on the ferry |
No car? Then the catamaran is much faster than the ferry plus a bus or taxi. It also arrives in Hvar Town, where most hotels are. A private boat is faster than both public options. It stops at the dock closest to where you sleep, at any time of day or night. Check the price of a private boat from Split to Stari Grad or Hvar Town.
Von Stari Grad nach Hvar-Stadt: Die Weiterreise, die viele vergessen zu planen
Is Hvar Town your final stop, and did you take the car ferry? Then you still have one more step. Stari Grad is about 19–20 km from Hvar Town. That is 20–35 minutes by road. If you drive off the ferry, follow road D116 and the signs to Hvar. On foot, take the local bus. The bus company is Čazmatrans. The bus waits for the ferries and goes to Hvar Town, Jelsa and Vrboska. It runs up to four times a day, and you pay the driver in cash. In summer it can fill up fast after a busy ferry. The timetable changes with the season, so check it on the spot. Taxis also wait at the pier. They cost about €30–45 to Hvar Town. With luggage, a taxi is the easiest option.
Stari Grad is more than a stop on the way. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe where people have lived without a break. Its old town centre and the Stari Grad Plain (old Greek farm fields next to the town) are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. A holiday here is slower, cheaper and quieter than in Hvar Town. Not sure which town suits you? Read our Stari Grad oder Hvar Stadtführer.
Tipp des Skippers: are you going to Jelsa or Vrboska, not Hvar Town? Jelsa and Vrboska are small quiet towns on the north coast of Hvar. Stari Grad is the closest port to both — each is less than 11 km away. That is closer than Hvar Town. Do not let the word “Hvar” in a search result send you the wrong way. Our Vrboska-Reiseführer covers this quiet side of the island.
Kein Auto? Nehmen Sie die schnellere Route nach Hvar-Stadt.
Without a car, the ferry to Stari Grad plus a bus or taxi is rarely the best choice. It is slower, and it is not cheaper than going direct. The passenger catamaran goes straight to Hvar Town in 50–60 minutes. Two companies run it: Jadrolinija (line 641) and Krilo (also called Kapetan Luka). In peak summer there are up to 18–20 sailings a day. A foot ticket costs about €10–30. Krilo is often cheaper outside peak season. The last boat back to Split usually leaves around 20:00. Read more in our Routenführer von Split nach Hvar. (Line 9603 stops in Stari Grad on some Split–Bol–Jelsa sailings, but this changes. Check jadrolinija.hr.)
All public boats stop when the wind is very strong. A strong bura (a cold north-east wind) or jugo (a warm south-east wind) stops the fast catamarans first. The car ferry usually keeps sailing for longer. Our closed-cabin boats have radar and can often still sail when the catamarans are cancelled. This is important if you have a flight to catch. See our Notfallplan für Fährausfall.
Die direkte Option: ein privates Boot nach Stari Grad
We run this route almost every day. There is no two-hour car ferry and no bus after a catamaran. A private transfer from Split (or Split Airport) to Stari Grad takes about 55 minutes. Our boats have a closed cabin and radar: Great White 49, 39 and 35, and Lolivul 9. We leave when you want. We stop at the dock closest to your home for the holiday: the Stari Grad waterfront, a private villa jetty along the coast, or Hvar Town if you stay there.
You pay per boat, not per person. Split–Hvar costs €370–900, and Stari Grad has the same price. The price depends on boat size and time of day. Split Airport–Hvar costs €400–900. For a group of six or eight, this is close to the cost of several catamaran tickets plus a taxi at the other end. And you do not wait, and you do not risk a cancelled boat. See our Transferseite vom Flughafen Split nach Hvar to learn what makes the price go up or down. Send us a message with your dates and group size. We give you a clear price — no packages and no extra sales.
Welche sollten Sie wählen?
Are you bringing a car, or gear that does not fit on a boat? Then line 635 to Stari Grad is your only real public option. Plan the full trip, with the drive or bus after the ferry. In summer, book the place for your car early. No car, and staying near Hvar Town? Skip Stari Grad and take the catamaran straight there. Do you want to avoid timetables and wind, or does your flight land late at night? A private boat takes you to Stari Grad in under one hour, when you want. Send the crew a message with your dates. We tell you honestly if a private boat or the ferry is the better choice that day. Still choosing where to stay? FAQ: Aufteilung nach Stari Grad
Ist Stari Grad dasselbe wie Hvar-Stadt?
No. They are two different towns on the same island, about 20 km apart by road (a 20–35 minute drive). The Split car ferry arrives in Stari Grad. To reach Hvar Town directly, take the passenger catamaran.
Wie lange dauert die Fährüberfahrt von Split nach Stari Grad?
The Jadrolinija car ferry (line 635) takes about 1h50–2h (officially 110 minutes). It can take longer in bad weather or with loading delays. The passenger catamaran to Hvar Town is faster (50–60 minutes), but it does not carry cars.
Wie viel kostet die Fähre von Split nach Stari Grad?
In the 2026 high season (29 May–27 September), an adult pays €8.40 and a standard car €47.60. That is about €56 in total, one way. In low season, you pay about €5.90 plus €35.60, around €41.50 in total.
Muss ich die Autofähre im Voraus buchen?
Yes, if you bring a car. A ticket for one sailing also holds the place for your car. Without a ticket, there is no promise of space. Popular sailings in July and August sell out days before, so book with Jadrolinija early.
Wie komme ich ohne Auto von Stari Grad nach Hvar-Stadt?
Take the local Čazmatrans bus. It waits for the ferries and goes to Hvar Town, Jelsa and Vrboska. It costs a few euros, paid in cash. It runs only a few times a day and the timetable changes with the season, so check it on the spot. Taxis also wait at the pier and cost about €30–45 to Hvar Town.
Gibt es eine schnellere Möglichkeit, von Split nach Hvar zu gelangen als mit der Autofähre?
Yes, if you have no car. The passenger catamaran goes to Hvar Town in 50–60 minutes. A private boat takes about 55 minutes to Stari Grad or Hvar Town, and it leaves when you want, 24/7.
Kann ich von Split direkt mit der Autofähre nach Hvar-Stadt fahren, anstatt nach Stari Grad?
No. On this side of the island, Stari Grad is the only car ferry port. On foot and going to Hvar Town? Take the catamaran, or a private boat that stops where you stay.
Was passiert mit Fähren bei schlechtem Wetter?
A strong bura (cold north-east wind) or jugo (warm south-east wind) stops the fast catamarans first. The car ferry usually keeps sailing for longer. Closed-cabin private boats are built for rougher sea. They can often still sail when the catamarans are cancelled. This helps if you have a flight to catch.

Two tips for Stari Grad itself. Antika is a good small restaurant in the old streets, listed in the Gault&Millau food guide. Maslina Resort is a five-star hotel on the bay. Between them is Tvrdalj, the old stone summer house of the poet Petar Hektorović, built with walls like a small castle.
