Do you want to go from Séparé à Stari Grad with a car? Then you need the Jadrolinija car ferry (line 635). Split is the big port city on the mainland. Stari Grad is a small old harbour town on the north coast of Hvar island. The ferry takes about 1h50–2h. In high season, one adult plus a standard car pays about €56 one way (€41.50 in low season). No car? The fast catamaran to Hvar Town is quicker. A private boat can take you to the Stari Grad waterfront in under one hour. Remember: Stari Grad and Hvar Town are two different towns, about 20 km apart.

Car-ferry Split-Stari Grad (ligne Jadrolinija 635) : horaires et tarifs 2026

“Hvar” is the name of the island and also of its best-known town. The car ferry from Split does not go to Hvar Town. It goes to Stari Grad, a separate harbour about 20 km from Hvar Town. Are you bringing a car, a bike or a camper? Then Stari Grad is your port. Are you on foot and staying near Hvar Town? Then you usually want the catamaran. So the real question is simple: do you need a car on the island?

Line 635 is the only public boat from Split that carries cars to Hvar. There is one other car ferry, from Drvenik to Sućuraj. Drvenik is a small port on the mainland, about 1.5 hours south of Split by car. Sućuraj is a village on the far east end of Hvar, a long drive from the main towns. The official crossing time on line 635 is 110 minutes. Plan for 1h50–2h, and a bit more when the sea is rough.

The ferry runs every day, all year. In peak summer (about 19 June–23 August 2026) there are about seven sailings each way. In the weeks before and after, there are six. In winter there are five. The first boat leaves early, around 05:00–05:30. In peak season the last boat leaves in the late evening.

Prices change with the season. In the 2026 high season (29 May–27 September), an adult ticket is €8.40. A standard car (up to 5.0 m long and 2.0 m high) is €47.60. That is about €56 one way. In low season (1 Jan–28 May and 28 Sep–31 Dec), you pay €5.90 plus €35.60, about €41.50 in total.

Many people miss this: your ticket for a sailing is also the place for your car on that boat. In July and August, popular sailings sell out days before. Book with Jadrolinija early. With a car, come to the port 45–60 minutes before departure.

Conseil du capitaine : is your sailing sold out? Try the Drvenik–Sućuraj ferry. It is shorter and not as busy. But it arrives on the far east end of Hvar, so you then drive 60–75 minutes across the island. It saves your trip, but you arrive later.

Is a private transfer worth it? A simple cost check

Many people do not know this: in peak season, the last car ferry to Stari Grad leaves in the evening. If your flight is late or delayed, there is no public boat until the morning. Comparaison : ferry, catamaran, bus ou bateau privé

No car? Then the catamaran is much faster than the ferry plus a bus or taxi. It also arrives in Hvar Town, where most hotels are. A private boat is faster than both public options. Is Hvar Town your final stop, and did you take the car ferry? Then you still have one more step. Stari Grad is about 19–20 km from Hvar Town. That is 20–35 minutes by road. If you drive off the ferry, follow road D116 and the signs to Hvar. On foot, take the local bus. The bus company is Čazmatrans. The bus waits for the ferries and goes to Hvar Town, Jelsa and Vrboska. It runs up to four times a day, and you pay the driver in cash. In summer it can fill up fast after a busy ferry. The timetable changes with the season, so check it on the spot. Taxis also wait at the pier. They cost about €30–45 to Hvar Town. With luggage, a taxi is the easiest option.

Stari Grad is more than a stop on the way. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe where people have lived without a break. Its old town centre and the Stari Grad Plain (old Greek farm fields next to the town) are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. A holiday here is slower, cheaper and quieter than in Hvar Town. Stari Grad is the closest port to both — each is less than 11 km away. That is closer than Hvar Town. Do not let the word “Hvar” in a search result send you the wrong way. Without a car, the ferry to Stari Grad plus a bus or taxi is rarely the best choice. It is slower, and it is not cheaper than going direct. The passenger catamaran goes straight to Hvar Town in 50–60 minutes. Two companies run it: Jadrolinija (line 641) and Krilo (also called Kapetan Luka). In peak summer there are up to 18–20 sailings a day. A foot ticket costs about €10–30. Krilo is often cheaper outside peak season. The last boat back to Split usually leaves around 20:00. All public boats stop when the wind is very strong. A strong bura (a cold north-east wind) or jugo (a warm south-east wind) stops the fast catamarans first.
