What to plan around (the honest part)

Timetables thin: catamaran lines drop to off-season schedules through October — the direct Bol line ends late September, the Hvar fast boats shrink toward the winter pattern (exact dates in the Split–Hvar ferry guide’s month-by-month section), and island buses shrink with them. Weather swings: most days are T-shirt gold; then a two-day jugo blows through and cancels the fast boats (see our cancellation backup plan). Some doors close: beach clubs and a slice of restaurants shutter mid-month; the good konobas stay.

Skipper’s tip: build October days around mornings — the sea feels warmest compared to the air before noon. Also book accommodation with heating — stone houses stay warm from summer and cool down slowly, so ask about heating for the last week of the month.

The October playbook

Base in Stari Grad or Komiža (towns that live year-round), do the Blue Cave without a single queue (open until ~1 November, weather permitting), taste the new harvest in Jelsa’s cellars (wine guide), and island-hop on the days when the weather is good. Public boats still cover the basics; for the legs they’ve stopped serving — Bol direct, late evenings, Vis on a quiet day — private boats run year-round, 24/7, and October is when same-day booking is effortless. Skipper’s tip #2: the first two weeks and the last two weeks feel like different months. Oct 1–15 still feels like summer — swim daily, eat outside. Oct 15–31 feels like true autumn — expect strong winds, bring a warm jacket, and enjoy empty UNESCO towns and taverns (konobas) with a fire lit.

October is quietly one of the best months to be on the water in Dalmatia: the sea is still warm from summer, the light is softer, and the crowds have gone — but the ferry timetable thins out fast once the schools go back. This is where a private boat is most useful in shoulder season, running on your schedule when the catamaran only sails twice a day. The sea can also turn quicker in autumn, so a closed-cabin, radar-equipped boat matters more than it does in July.
