The cave sits in a small cove called Balun on the south side of Biševo, close to Komiža, a small fishing town on the west coast of Vis island. It is not near Split — many first-time visitors do not expect this. By fast boat, Biševo is about 90 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes from Split. That is why almost nobody visits the cave on its own. It is one stop on a longer island day that also includes Vis. See our guide to hur man tar sig till ön Vis för de bredare överfartsalternativen.
The cave itself is small: about 24 metres long and up to 15 metres high inside. The entrance is only 1.5 metres high and 2.5 metres wide. Normal tour boats cannot fit through it. Everyone changes into small motor boats that carry about twelve people each. This is the real reason for the queue.
Är Blå Grottan värd det? Hur folk faktiskt besöker den år 2026
There are three realistic ways to see it. The first is a big group speedboat tour from Split. It is the cheapest per person and the most crowded. It is usually sold as a “5-island” or “6-island” tour (Blue Cave, Vis, Stiniva, Pakleni, sometimes Hvar). The day takes 10–11 hours and starts at 07:00–08:00. The second way is a boat trip from Vis or Komiža. The crossing is then very short, because Biševo is only 15–20 minutes away. The third way is a private boat, direct from Split or joined at Komiža. This is the only way to control your own timing. You can leave at 07:00 and arrive before the group tours, instead of arriving with forty other boats on someone else’s schedule.
| Sätt att besöka | Tuff tid (Delad tid) | Grovkostnad | Vad du får |
|---|---|---|---|
| Privat taxibåt (Dalmatia Express) | ~65 min to Vis, then on to Biševo — 24/7, on your schedule — see Split–Vis privat transfer | From ~€460 per boat, fair for groups of 4–10 — skicka ett meddelande till oss för en offert | Door-to-door on your schedule. You pick the departure time to avoid the queue, Split Airport pickup is possible, and our closed-cabin boats often sail when catamarans cancel |
| Liten transferbåt in i grottan (valfritt alternativ ovan) | Kö: 10 min lågtrafik till 60–90+ min under rusningstid juli/augusti | Entréavgift — kontrollera den aktuella avgiften innan du går | 5–15 minuter faktiskt inne, endast kontanter, ingen bankomat på ön |
About the entrance fee: in 2026 the price changes by season. It is roughly €12 per adult in April–May, about €18 in June and again in September–October, and up to about €24 in peak summer. Children pay about half. You pay in cash at the cave, to the local cave authority. Bring small notes — there is no ATM on Biševo, and you cannot buy a skip-the-line ticket online. The numbers can change a little each year, so check the current fee before you travel.
Skepparens tips: if a website sells a pre-paid “skip the queue” ticket for the cave itself, be careful. The cave authority sells paper tickets on the spot, and no operator can jump the numbered queue. A “priority” package usually just means an earlier arrival at the island. That helps, but it is not the same as skipping the line once you are there.
Timing matters here more than almost anywhere else in Croatia. Sunlight must enter through the underwater opening at the right angle. It bounces off the white floor and fills the cave with blue light. On a bright, calm day this works best from about 11:00 to 13:00. Some official sources say the window can start as early as 9:00. If you arrive at 15:00 under clouds, you will see a normal cave. If you arrive at 11:30 on a clear day, you will see the famous blue glow. Late June to August gives the most reliable light and the biggest crowds. May, early June, and September–October give a good chance of the blue light with shorter queues. Once you are through the queue, you get 5–15 minutes inside. The official limit is about 15 minutes, but it is often shorter on busy days.
Why the sea can close the cave
The cave entrance faces south. It is open to waves from jugo (the warm south-east wind) and from any growing south-west sea. When waves push into the narrow underwater passage, it becomes unsafe for the small transfer boats. The cave authority then closes the cave completely — no exceptions. The cave is fully closed on roughly 10–15% of days in the season, often two days in a row. The final decision sometimes comes only around 8:00 that morning, from the port authority on Biševo. If you are on a group tour that day, you get what the operator offers instead — usually more time at Stiniva or the Green Cave.
One useful fact: when the weather turns bad, fast open boats and small tenders stop sailing first. A closed-cabin private boat can often still take you to Vis safely, even if the cave stays shut. It cannot get you into a closed cave. But it means a day with borderline weather does not have to cancel the whole trip.
Skepparens tips: if the forecast shows any jugo or a growing south wind, do not book the Blue Cave as a half-day trip on its own. Build a full day around Vis instead, with the Green Cave and Stiniva as backup stops. If Modra špilja closes that day, you still have a full, good day — not a wasted morning.
Almost nobody visits the Blue Cave alone, and you should not either. The crossing is too long for five minutes in a cave and nothing else. Most people also visit Stiniva Bay — a small pebble beach between high cliffs on the south coast of Vis, often listed among Croatia’s most beautiful beaches. Many trips add the Pakleni Islands — a chain of small green islands in front of Hvar Town — for lunch and a swim. The Green Cave, on the small islet of Ravnik near Vis, is the quieter option: you can swim inside it, and there is no queue. The towns of Vis and Komiža are worth an extra hour too. They are real harbour towns with very good seafood, not places built only for tourists. Our guide on att ta sig till ön Vis explains how to stay in either town for easier access.
Värt det om… / hoppa över det om…
Worth it if: you are flexible on timing and can aim for late morning; you combine it with Stiniva, the Green Cave, or a full Vis day; you are fine with a queue and a short visit; and you accept that this is a short natural wonder, not a museum visit.
Skip it if: you get seasick and cannot handle 90 or more minutes each way on a fixed group schedule; you have young children who will not enjoy waiting in the sun; you only have a day or two and want a calmer plan; or jugo wind is forecast and you cannot change your date. In that case, Stiniva, Pakleni, or Vis Town alone are a better use of your time. Want a clear answer for your dates? Meddela oss era datum och gruppstorlek and we will tell you honestly if that day looks like a good Blue Cave day.
Group tour or private boat: what the day really looks like
Here is the honest picture of a group-tour day. You leave Split at 07:00–08:00 with thirty or more people. You spend 90 minutes or more on the water. You join a numbered queue at Mezuporat, the small arrival cove on Biševo. The wait runs from ten minutes to well over an hour in peak season. You change into a small boat with strangers, get five to ten minutes inside the cave, and go straight back to the main boat for the next stop. It is efficient and affordable — a fair way to see a famous sight and four or five other places in one day. But you do not choose your arrival time, your place in the queue, or how long you stay.
A private boat changes the shape of the day, not the destination. If you arrive with the first boats, or in a quiet gap between the group-tour waves, the queue is often much shorter than in the mid-morning rush. The rest of the day runs on your schedule, not on a shared timetable. It costs more per person than a seat on a group speedboat. But if you already plan a full day around Vis, our Privat transfer från Split till Vis page has the times and prices, and the day pairs easily with Stiniva and the Green Cave. We can also route the whole day through vår utflykt i Blå grottan som ett enda paket.
Vad man ska ta med sig
Bring cash in small euro notes — there is no ATM on Biševo, and cards are not accepted for the entrance fee. Bring a hat and water, because the waiting area at Mezuporat has little shade and the small café gets crowded. Bring a dry bag or a waterproof phone case, because you may get splashed when you change boats in waves. And bring something for seasickness if you need it — it is a long day on the water.

Yes, for most travellers. The blue light is one of Croatia’s most striking natural sights. It is worth the trip at the right time (11:00–13:00 on a calm day), if you accept the peak-season crowds. It works better as one stop on a fuller day around Vis, Stiniva and the Green Cave than as a trip on its own.
In 2026 the fee changes by season: roughly €12 per adult early in the season, about €18 in June and September–October, and up to about €24 at peak summer. Children pay about half. It is cash only and separate from any tour price. Fees can change each year, so check the current fee before you travel.
The entrance faces south and is open to waves from jugo (south-east) winds and south-west seas. When waves make the narrow underwater passage unsafe for the small transfer boats, the local authority closes the cave completely. This happens on roughly 10–15% of days in the season, sometimes two days in a row, and the decision often comes only around 8:00 that morning.
Not with your own boat — the entrance is only 1.5 metres high, so everyone changes into small local boats at Biševo. But you can reach Biševo on your own via Vis or Komiža, join the queue, and pay the fee yourself.
Hur länge tillbringar man egentligen inne i Blå grottan?
The official limit is about 15 minutes. In practice most visitors get 5–10 minutes, because the small boats keep moving to clear the queue behind them.
Vad mer borde jag se nära Blå grottan?
The Green Cave on Ravnik islet (you can swim inside it), Stiniva Bay, the Pakleni Islands near Hvar, and the towns of Vis and Komiža. Almost every tour and private boat builds the Blue Cave into a day that includes one or two of these.
