Vis Town and Komiža are the two main towns on Vis, a small island in the Adriatic Sea. They are 10 km apart, with a mountain between them. They feel very different. Vis Town looks towards the mainland and has a long history. Komiža looks to the open sea and has a fishing tradition. Your stay will be quite different depending on which riva (seafront promenade) you choose.

Vis Town — the calm, elegant town

A long old harbour built by the Venetians (rulers of this coast in past centuries), with Roman baths and stone palaces, wine bars in vaulted cellars, the ferry pier. It’s the practical base: bigger grocery, more rental agencies, the bus line. Two beaches, Grandovac and Stončica, are an easy bike ride away. Choose it for: a first visit to Vis, groups who want more choice, and people who use public boats.

Komiža — the quiet fishing village

In the evening you can smell grilled fish. Two beaches, Kamenica and Gusarica, are right in town. Choose it for: couples, photographers, an easy Blue Cave day, and return visits.

Skepparens tips: cannot choose? Sleep in Komiža, and on your arrival day have the boat drop you in Vis Town for lunch and the tunnels tour (WWII military tunnels cut into the hillside, open to visitors), then carry you around the island’s west cape to Komiža by sea — the cliffs along this sea route are the best free sight on Vis.

Skepparens tips #2: off-season (October–April) the Komiža bus thins to a few runs a day timed to school, not ferries. If you stay in Komiža in autumn, winter or spring, either line up a taxi in advance or land directly on the Komiža riva by boat — same price either harbour.

Använda Komiža som bas i Blå grottan (2026)

Komiža is the closest harbour to Biševo, so if the Blue Cave is high on your list, staying here shortens the final leg to 15–30 minutes instead of the long haul from Split. A private boat from Split to Vis runs about 65 minutes (from around €460 per boat) and can land you in either town; from Komiža you are well placed for an early cave run before the Split day-tours arrive.
